The Queen is Dead

Ummm, that's very sad, but it's kinda old news now, Laura. Wait, no, no no! You don't understand - I am talking about the amazing album by The Smiths! I think this is a fitting album to listen to as I strip down that stupid box to bare wood again, because it is the other band that Brian gifted to me and my family. Morrissey is reputed to be quite unpleasant to work with, but he is a brilliant dark poet. In case you aren't familiar with The Smiths and the poetry of Morrissey, here are a couple of snippets:

From Bigmouth Strikes Again:

"Sweetness, Sweetness, I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head. Oh Sweetness, Sweetness, I was only joking when I said by rights you should be bludgeoned in your bed."

From There is a Light That Never Goes Out

"If a double decker bus smashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die. And if a ten-tonne truck kills the both of us, to die by your side, well the pleasure, the privilege is mine."

Lets talk about art. I struggle with the priorities any artist who tries to sell art has to deal with. Do I make what I want to make, or make what I think will sell? It is so hard, and I want to make what I want to make. Well guess what folks, I have THREE craft fairs coming up in the next month and a half and I need to figure my shit out for the stuff I make in the coming weeks. I like making boxes. Do people need boxes? Well, they are functional as well as decorative, so I hope they do, but I confess they aren't great sellers, I just love doing them. I like painting canvases. Are they functional? No, except to be interesting to look at. They do sell, but I have a lot to move. I also enjoy making coasters because the resin is so critical and they are shiny and have so much depth. But do people even use coasters? They sell, so I guess they do. I definitely like making ornaments, as I think they are unique compared to what other people are making. So this is what I want to focus on this winter. Maybe I have chosen the wrong things, but I want to do what I feel respects what I feel is art. What if they don't sell? Well then I guess I am out a few hundred bucks in booth fees and I have a buttload of useless stuff carefully packed away to try to figure out another way to get rid of it.
